Usually when we think of September in Southern California, we think major heat with a hint of wildfire ash. But Ryan + Caleb’s engagement photos at Sunset Cliffs in San Diego turned out to be an absolutely perfect day complete with a light ocean breeze, 70 degree weather, and conditions so clear we could see San Clemente Island! This session is what happens when a military brat who grew up surfing at Lowers near Camp Pendleton and a Texas gal decide they can’t live without each other. I cannot wait for their wedding at The Dana on Mission Bay this fall!
Engagement sessions are truly the best way to gain confidence and feel natural in front of the camera. It sounds counterintuitive right?! One way I help my couples feel like a million bucks in front of the camera is by taking the time to get to know them first. Before Ryan + Caleb’s engagement session, they received a lengthy personality/relationship questionnaire from me. I used their answers to direct the session so I could prompt them in ways that really felt THEM.
For example, Ryan + Calebs mentioned that they are ALWAYS poking fun at each other. So naturally we adventured throughout Sunset Cliffs while they playfully channeled their inner child and I just snapped photos along the way.
Oh, and Caleb said hi to his navy platoon in the air!
After reaching the cliff’s edge, we claimed front row seats to watch locals drop in on epic glassy waves and ride down the line as the sky faded into a pink and blue pastel painting. Watching those surfers was the perfect ending to the adventuresome engagement session since Caleb was able to explain how surfing worked to his Texas-native fiancee.
I take my couples to locations that reflect their personalities and Sunset Cliffs near Point Loma Nazarene University was a perfect fit for Ryan + Caleb. These summer-like fall engagement photos really capture the warmth and beauty of coastal San Diego, don’t they?
